Red Wattle/Large Black:

The Large Black is a long, deep-bodied pig, well known for its hardiness and suitability for extensive farming. Large Blacks are best suited for pasture-based farming due to their strong foraging and grazing ability, which efficiently converts poor quality feed into meat. The breed is also known for its long periods of fertility and strong maternal instincts. Sows give birth to a large litter of 8–10 piglets, but some sows have been known to have litters of up to 13 piglets. Boars weigh 700 to 800 pounds and sows around 600 to 700 pounds. Temperamentally, the Large Black is a very docile breed which is easily contained by fencing. This is partly because its large, drooping ears obscure its vision, although they also help to protect the face and eyes while the animal is foraging, especially when rooting in dirt.

Red Wattle hogs are famous for their robustness and feeding activity. Additionally, the sows are amazing mothers, and they can litter 10-15 piglets. The boars can weigh up to 750 lbs while the sows can reach 549 lbs. However, there are Red Wattle pigs that are known to weigh 1,200 lbs. These pigs forage well, grow fast, and have good disease resistance. They are also mild-tempered and hardy, allowing them to easily adapt to many different climate patterns. Their active feeding makes them a worthy consideration for outdoor or pasture pig production. Meanwhile, their docile nature is suitable for small-scale and independent farmers.

The Pigs we ranch are two amazing heritage breeds, and we have bred them as pure breed as well as hybrids of the two. The Large black is prized as excellent meat hogs. The Red Wattles are known more for their flavorful, tender, marbled meat, generally referred to as a lard hog. When bred together, the offspring take on the best characteristics of both, yielding a fast growing, hardy, and delicious pig.
